In the logistics world attention has increasingly turned to the creation of integrated systems for managing the entire process. Based on this development Embit has paid particular attention to certain areas such as tracking, traceability and identification of people and objects, with the aim of bridging the gap between applications and available technologies.
Most tracking and identification systems are now based on tags and RFIDs (radio frequency identification); RFIDs provide an ID when requested, but lack the features and the flexibility of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) composed by low-power devices embedding microcontrollers.
Embit promotes new wireless technologies, such as ZigBee, IEEE 802.15.4 and WMBUS, which are characterized by low power consumption and low cost, as complementary or alternative technologies to the typical, limited RFID-based systems.
In this field Embit is working to introduce a gradual shift from identification systems based on simple tags, to more advanced systems with distributed intelligence in which each identifier, thanks to the intelligence made available by the on-board microcontroller, can be used as a sensor or as a router and is also capable of performing local signal processing tasks.
